Welcome to the HowToBecomeAJournalist blog!
Dear media and journalism friends,
The HowToBecomeAJournalist blog is a weekly posting about the highs and lows of becoming a journalist, how to find a job in journalism, and all the complexities and issues sorrounding the journalism industry, that will affect us ‘journalists’ in the future.

The blog is for aspiring, struggling, new and young journalists wanting a career only journalism, and preferably in Australia.
Why should you read this blog?
This blog is a place where you can read my experiences as an emerging journalist, journalism industry information, advice, and tips on how to become a journalist, land a job and suceed.
The journalism industry in Australia is very hard to get into, competitive, and small, with fewer job openings. But guess what? You’re not alone, I’m here to support you, and give you all the information to help you make it happen!
Why did I decide to write this blog?

I’m a media university graduate, and I’ve just enrolled in a Masters of Journalism. I’ve participated in a electronic journalism exchange program in America as part of my degree. I have a lot of work experience (paid employment and voluntary) across different media (print/TV/radio/online). BUT, there’s always a BUT, I still can’t land job in journalism itself, a reporter for newspapers or TV.
Looking at my resume, I came to the conclusion- I’m not underqualified. Ok, so I should have much more under my belt, but what I have is substantial and good.
I soon discovered that I wasn’t alone, there are many people in my situation. Yes, we can blame the industry, which can be labelled as unstable and exploitative, with fewer jobs.
But, it’s also an opportunity to work on your flaws and mistakes, we’ve all made them. I have, yes I’m not perfect! Though it takes those pitfalls to understand how to approach effectively the journalism industry.
I must say, I’m still learning, otherwise I wouldn’t be writing this blog. I will help you decide if journalism is your passion and how to work on it to get a foot in the door, and survive in the industry.
FYI the journalism industry can be like rollercoaster ride after eating a juicy hamburger with curly fries, and a strawberry milkshake. Ouch! I’m sure we have all done this, and learnt not to ever do it again. Though, we keep jumping on the wagon again, and again, only this time we know better.
As time goes by, the journalism ride feels more like the Chilli Peppers ‘Roller Coaster of Love’.
Journalism becomes a passion, especially when you don’t have it in your power yet. Remember, if you’re really determined you’ll make it!
Check out the HowToBecomeAJournalist blog every week for all you ever wanted to know about a career in journalism.
Keep rockin’
